Letter: Protect us from real criminals
Derek Williams Evening News, Norwich
Tuesday 04 Aug 1992 IT SHOULD make me sleep easier in my bed to know that society is being protected by diligent officers of the law working for the good of us all. I suppose it should he comforting to discover the police will go to great lengths and spend vast amounts of money to catch criminals. Sadly, I don't feel any safer in my bed, just poorer in my pocket. Sorry, but I fail to see how the police can justify spending a year or so of scarce time and resources merely to catch cannabis dealers (Evening News, July 28). Someone needs their knuckles rapped. No doubt the police will say they managed to restrict the supply or cannabis for a short while. Well, if they did, it will only have had the effect of putting the street price up a bit making it worth someone else's time to set up a new supply route. All this will do is strengthen, not diminish, the black market When will the supposed intelligent people in charge understand that the prohibition of cannabis is a lost cause? At about six million (according to The Times) there are more cannabis smokers than churchgoers in this country. I would only ask the police to spend what limited resources they have to protect us from the likes of thieves, joyriders and muggers, the kind of people I for one think of as real criminals. When I see the evidence of that type of police work, then maybe I'll get a good night's sleep. Derek Williams Pembroke Road Norwich
