Letter: Clampdown on cannabis so unnecessary

Thursday 24 Oct 1991 I REFER to the article "Big squeeze on drug dealers" (Evening News, October 18) and in particular the question of cannabis use. Although widely used, I know of no problems connected with cannabis; it is not addictive, it does not cause violence and many users claim it aids relaxation and artistic appreciation. This contrasts with the mayhem often caused by drink. How is it that cannabis can be bought over the counter in Holland, smoked openly and freely, and yet here it is seen as some kind of evil? Holland certainly hasn't fallen into anarchic destitution, why should Britain? The police will say, no doubt, that they must always enforce the law no matter how stupid. Yet every day the police must make priority-based decisions, in which case I believe cannabis use should come a long way down the list after things like mugging, vandalism, joyriding and the rest. I would like to know why then, at a time of increasing violent disorder, the police devote so much of the drug squads' time and effort (four out of five offences involve cannabis) into enforcing this particular law? Surely this time could be better spent protecting society against evils that actually matter. The only danger in using cannabis would seem to be the danger of arrest.
