UK: Pain-relief drug user (73) faces jail
BBC News
Tuesday 07 Feb 2006 An arthritis sufferer is facing a jail sentence after police found 20 cannabis plants growing in his back bedroom. Leslie Williams, 73, of Runcorn, Cheshire, admitted growing the plants to relieve the pain. Williams received a police caution for a similar offence last year, Runcorn magistrates heard. The magistrates sent him to crown court for sentencing, saying the maximum three-month jail term they could impose may not be enough punishment. Police were called to Williams' house after neighbours became concerned for his welfare because they had not seen him for some time. Officers broke the door down, searched the house and found the plants inside. The former Merchant Navy seaman had constructed a greenhouse with heating and lighting. Williams told officers he grew the plants to smoke cannabis for pain relief as he suffers from chronic arthritis after having four strokes. He said he did not want to buy from street dealers, so decided to grow his own. Adam Wright, defending, said: "It was not for commercial gain. He is 73 years of age. "What we need to do is consider a way to stop him from doing this in the future, some other way of addressing his arthritis." He is due at Warrington Crown Court on 10 March.
