Israel: Green Leaf appeals ban from high school mock elections
Anat Roeh Haaretz.com, Israel
Wednesday 15 Feb 2006 The Green Leaf Party asked the Tel Aviv District Court on Monday to issue a temporary injunction forcing the Blich high school in Ramat Gan to include the party in its mock elections. The party issued its claim against the school, its principal and the city of Ramat Gan. The party is basing its claim on the fact that while it is legally recognized, the high school refuses to include it in its elections. The high school customarily holds mock elections that are said to foreshadow the national election results. Advertisement Green Leaf has charged that the high school stacked its committee that decided whether to allow the party to participate with an unequal number of teachers and parents to students. According to the charges, Blich informed the party that it planned to strike a special committee to decide whether the party could participate. The school later told the party it had not authorized its participation. According to Green Leaf, the committee comprised six students, six civil studies teachers and six members of the parents associations, which the party said ensured a 2/3 majority against it. The party also complained that Meretz, whose platform is similar to Green Leaf's with regard to the legalization of marijuana, was not required to undergo review by a similar committee. Grean Leaf's platform calls for legalizing soft drugs, such as marijuana, whose use would not entail punishment unless carried out in the presence of minors. It also calls for closing the criminal cases opened for those convicted of using light drugs. The platform advocates enabling a growing number of cannabis plants for personal use, or buying it at special shops located in industrial areas, which will operate only in the evening hours. Representatives of Blich high school and the city of Ramat Gan were not available for comment.
