UK: Police Blitz on Drug Dealers
Gemma Fraser News & Star, Carlisle
Wednesday 15 Feb 2006 A POLICE blitz on drug dealers in Workington has led to six arrests, cutting off a major supply chain in the town centre. A further eight raids have been carried out in homes across Workington – including a drugs den used by schoolchildren. Police launched Operation Rhesus to crack down on dealers using public places in the town centre to sell drugs. Vulcan’s Park was targeted as one of the hotspots. Police described the drug dealing as blatant, with much of it carried out in broad daylight from different places and at varying times. Complaints from local businesses, residents and schools formed part of the police intelligence, along with surveillance which lasted around two months. Sergeant Jason Robinson, who co-ordinated the operation, told the News & Star: “Dealers were using a method which hasn’t been used round here, which is why it was so difficult to keep tabs on them and why it took so much surveillance. “But my team worked round the clock on it, even coming in on days off to get this result. “It has made the town centre safer. “The drugs are not as readily available to people as they were when the dealing was taking place in the town.” Two of the six men arrested during the operation had only recently been released from prison. They are now back in custody until their case is dealt with. The other four men are on police bail. All matters relate to the possession and supply of heroin. Following Operation Rhesus, police targeted a number of homes in Workington. A property on Gordon Street was searched after complaints from neighbours about anti-social behaviour, drug-taking and reports that schoolchildren were being supplied with drugs. When police searched the house, they found a 14-year-old girl there and, although she had not taken any drugs, they were concerned that she was in a property being used for drug taking. Both herbal cannabis and cannabis resin were found. A 22-year-old man was given a police caution for possession of cannabis and for allowing his premises to be used for drug taking. Another man was charged with possession with intent to supply after a substantial quantity of heroin was found at his Needham Drive home. Properties in Cusack Crescent, Bowflatts, Crummock Road and Newlands Gardens were also searched.
