Scotland: Sheriff slams cannabis change
Evening Telegraph, Dundee
Monday 27 Feb 2006 Dundee Sheriff Richard Davidson today effectively branded MPs as idiots for reclassifying cannabis. Just over a year ago, the Government-supported Bill to reduce the drug from Class B to C became law, despite strong protests over the danger of mental health problems associated with cannabis. In fact, Home Secretary Charles Clarke had to promise to review the law at a later date to get the support he needed to get the legislation through parliament. Today’s comments from Sheriff Davidson came as he sentenced a Dundee youth for stealing razor blades from Asda in Kirkton. Noting that the youth, 17, now had mental health difficulties because of cannabis, the sheriff said he hoped “those idiots who declassified it” were aware of the horrendous upsurge there would now be in mental health disorders in youngsters over the next 20 years. The youth was placed on a Restriction of Liberty Order for two months with a 7pm to 7am curfew when he appeared for sentence. He had previously admitted theft on June 26. Sheriff Davidson told Wallace had he not detoxed from his addiction while in detention he would have had no hesitation in sending him back into custody. The sheriff also noted the youth seemed to be doing well on a current Restriction of Liberty Order and told him the new order would begin on April 27, the day after the current order expires. http://www.eveningtelegraph.co.uk/output/2006/02/27/story8072146t0.shtm
