Antigua: Police discover marijuana field at Friars Hill
Antigua Sun
Tuesday 28 Feb 2006 Police have filed a number of charges against a 35-year-old Friars Hill man after a tip led them to an area where a large number of cannabis plants were being cultivated. Police said the raid netted about 1,300 mature plants, more than 4,000 seedlings and just over 30 lbs of cannabis. According to police public relations officer Superintendent McLean Hunte, Jerome Roberts has been arrested and charged in connection with the cultivation and possession of the marijuana, which was being grown in the Friars Hill area. Police officers swooped down on the area last Saturday, acting on a tip from an undisclosed source and discovered the marijuana plantation, allegedly being grown by Roberts. Hunte pointed out that, contrary to early radio reports that as much as 4,000 lbs of cannabis had been found, the amount of the controlled substance seized, though substantial, was far less. In addition to the drugs, the Friars Hill resident was also found to be in possession of two unlicensed firearms along with related ammunition. He now faces charges for these offences also. According to Hunte, Roberts’ live-in girlfriend was also taken into custody after the raid, but no charges have as yet been laid against her.
