UK: Drug-sniff dog on Brum's buses

---
A SNIFFER dog is being given a ticket to ride city buses to scent out
top deck drug users.

The initiative was welcomed today by deputy city leader Paul Tilsley who
claimed that so many people were puffing dope on one route - the No.11
outer circle - that it had been nicknamed the Cannabis Express.

"It gives a whole new meaning to the phrase a round trip," he said.

Ten police community support officers have already been put on a city
bus beat - and the sniffer dog and three police officers will now join them.

Coun Tilsley (Lib Dem, Sheldon) said that the continuing fall in bus
ridership was because passengers - particularly women - don't feel safe.

He was confident the police presence would make an impact. Drivers were
reluctant to tackle yobs for fear of being targeted, he added.

The crackdown saw police snatch squads taking misbehaving passengers off
buses in Digbeth High Street last week.

"We need more of this because it is this kind of action that will give
passengers a feeling of safety. Two thirds of bus passengers are female
and the one thing that puts them off is any sign of criminality."

The West Midlands has been fined £2.5 million by the Government which
has cut back on transport grants this year because of the region's
failure to boost bus usage.
