UK: Hunt to weed out drug factory suspect

Police discover up to 1,000 cannabis plants growing in terraced house
Police are hunting a cannabis grower after a"factory" for large-scale
cultivation of the illegal drug was discovered by chance in a quiet
residential area in Bedford.

Officers were called to an ill-kept terraced house in St Leonard's
Street off Ampthill Road on Monday and found all but one room stuffed
with between 500 and 1,000 plants.

The cannabis weeds were in "various stages of development", according to
officers, and had been expertly tended with professional heating,
lighting and air conditioning.

Neighbours expressed their shock at the discovery, made when bailiffs
entered the home on an unrelated matter.

They appeared to have disturbed someone who left in a hurry via the back
door, leaving food cooking on the hob and escaping either down a narrow
passage which runs behind the terrace or through an area of newer
housing to the rear.

A resident said: "I have lived here for four years, and it's a quiet
area where the neighbours are really friendly. We saw the police hanging
about here for absolutely ages and thought there were bailiffs there at
first, or maybe even a murder.

"But we are still shocked about it."

Another neighbour said the house appeared to have been occupied by a
single man, aged around 40, of Oriental appearance, although it was
unclear whether he stayed there permanently or just visited.

The neighbour said: "I saw him go in and out of the house but I never
spoke to him. It was quite suspicious because the curtains were always
drawn and you would hardly ever see lights on."

Police officers spent nine hours at the scene to seize all the plants
and move the growing equipment to Greyfriars police station.

They uncovered a "nursery" in the attic, full of small plants, and
others in the main part of the house up to two-feet tall.

Some of the debris from the raid seems to have been deposited on the
small front yard of the house, with a large amount of compost left dumped.

Some of it still bears the shape of the pots which had contained it,
although the cannabis plants have been ripped out.
