UK: Pupil, 17, on drug dealer charges
Hertfordshire Mercury
Friday 10 Mar 2006 A HERTFORD schoolboy has been charged with drug dealing after police allegedly caught him with a KILO of cannabis. Tests are being carried out to see whether 136 white tablets, two bags of white powder and 9.5g of "white rocks" found during searches of the 17-year-old and his home are class A drugs. The street value of the 1.113kg (2lb 7oz) of cannabis is £2,400 to £3,600. Plastic bags with traces of white powder, scales, cannabis-flavoured rolling paper, three mobile phones and £542 cash were also discovered. The youth has been banned from accessing a Woolwich bank account in his name containing £1,500. The defendant, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has been withdrawn from his school. He was arrested at Bircherley Green bus station on Saturday and held in custody before appearing on Monday at Hertford Magistrates' Court. The case was referred to Hertford Youth Court the following day, when the youth pleaded not guilty to three counts of possessing a class C drug with intent to supply and one charge under proceeds of crime laws. If found guilty of the cannabis charges, he faces at least two years in prison. Class A drug dealers face a maximum jail term of life. The youth's parents, who were in court, put up £3,000 surety for bail. He was released and ordered to return to court on May 2 for a committal hearing. A Crown court trial will follow. A curfew bans the youth from leaving his address between 9pm and 6am. He was fitted with an electronic tag to record his movements.
