Czech: US-DEU to promote legalising marihuana in election campaign-press
CeskeNoviny.cz
Thursday 23 Mar 2006 Prague- The junior governing Freedom Union-DEU intends to orientate its election campaign towards young people and focus on "ultra-liberal" topics such as the promise to promote the legalisation of marihuana, the daily Lidove noviny writes. US-DEU head Pavel Nemec told the paper that his party did not want to limit its efforts to only pointing to the discrimination against people using marihuana, but intended to legalise its use in the future. "Discrimination is the first step and certainly is not the last one," he told the paper. Nemec says he himself has never smoked marihuana. "However, I am extremely tolerant. I am certainly against the imprisonment of people who grow one plant of marihuana in their garden for their own use," Nemec says. As justice minister, Nemec has contributed to the inclusion of the division of drugs into soft and hard in the new Penal Code that has finally not been passed by the Chamber of Deputies. US-DEU deputy chairman Ivo Ludvik told Lidove noviny that the party's election platform would focus on the "people who are young not only as regards their age, but also their thinking." As part of its election platform, the party wants to "prevent people from being bullied by authorities," he said. "We are of the view that everyone should be given an opportunity to do what he or she wants if they do not threaten other people or infringe upon their rights," Nemec told Lidove noviny. The Freedom Union-DEU intends to spend about 11 million crowns for its campaign before the June elections to the Chamber of Deputies. However, it will start campaigning only at the end of April due to its modest means. According to public opinion polls, the party has a small chance of gaining 5 percent of votes necessary to enter parliament two and a half months before the elections. For instance, according to the latest poll by the Factum Invenio agency, the US-DEU would receive less than three percent of votes if the elections were held now. ($1=23.756 crowns)
