Japan: Asahi Shimbun President's son busted for drugs
Mainichi Daily News
Tuesday 28 Mar 2006 The eldest son of the president of the Asahi Shimbun, a national daily newspaper, was arrested for possessing illegal drugs in Tokyo earlier this month, it was learned Tuesday. Ryuta Akiyama, 35, son of Asahi Shimbun President Kotaro Akiyama, is accused of violating the Cannabis Control Law. Akiyama senior was apologetic about the incident. "I'm surprised at my son's silly act. I would like him to take full responsibility for what he did and atone for his crime in accordance with the law," he said in a statement. The Asahi's public relations division declined to comment on the incident. "It was a private matter within the (president's) family, so the company as an entity is not in a position to explain the incident." On the night of March 10, police officers stopped Ryuta on a street in Tokyo's Shibuya-ku and arrested him after they found him in possession of 1 gram of cannabis. Ryuta works in producing television programs. Further details about his occupation were not immediately available. (Mainichi)
