Spain: 23 arrests in Torrevieja-based drug smuggling netowrk
Typically Spanish
Wednesday 29 Mar 2006 The Civil Guard have seized 30 tons of cannabis resin, after breaking up an international drug smuggling ring which brought drugs into Spain via the southern coast of Alicante province and the north of Murcia. Civil Guard command in Alicante say the operation, dubbed ‘Gata,’ was directed by the organised crime and drugs squad, beginning in July last year. The network involved a family clan of Moroccan Spaniards based in Torrevieja, and was led by a woman from Brazil. Twenty three of them have been arrested. They brought the drugs over the sea from Morocco by boat, and transported them in rented or stolen vans to chalets they had rented to store it until it could be distributed to their customers. The network also had urbanisation security guards on its payroll.
