Australia: Maternal marriage changes linked to child drug use
ABC on-line
Tuesday 04 Apr 2006 A University of Queensland researcher has found women who change their marital status can unwittingly push their children towards cannabis use. Dr Reza Hayakbakhsh conducted a study of more than 3,000 mothers and their children aged up to 21, between 2001 and 2004 in Brisbane. He says the results suggest a child's exposure to three or more changes in their mother's marital status more than doubles their risk of using marijuana. "There are significant, independent associations between the change in maternal marital status and use of cannabis by children," he said. "There was a stronger association between changing marital status and early onset of such use. "By early onset, I mean starting to use cannabis before 15 years of age."
