UK: Watch out the itemiser is about (Yeovil)

Avon and Somerset Constabulary

Wednesday 05 Apr 2006

---
Somerset East police now have their own drug testing itemiser.

The district has previously borrowed a drugs itemiser for operations
such as Relentless and it was met with a positive reaction from both
members of the public and licensee's.

However it now has its own machine and it has already been used on the
streets of Yeovil.

The itemiser can be used to swab the palm of a person's hand to give an
indication of recent contact with illegal substances, and it can also be
used to 'map out' a premise.

This means that the swab is used on surfaces within the premise to
identify where possible drug offences are prevalent.

Licensees in Somerset East are keen to work with police on this project
in order to gain a better understanding of potential drug problems
within their particular venues.

On Friday night the device was used at The Beach in Yeovil. The venue
management team and door staff participated in hand swabbing prior to
customers being swabbed and again it was met with a very positive
response from both staff and customers.

Nearly 250 swabs were taken a number showed positive, some of which were
taken from the venue.

As a result of positive swabs a number of people were searched and one
person was cautioned for possession of cannabis and one person was
arrested on suspicion of possession of heroin. He has been bailed
pending further enquires.

Chief Inspector Sandy Padgett said: " It is a fantastic device, it
reassures the pubs clubs and public, ensuring Yeovil and towns in
Somerset East are free of drugs, encouraging the customers every one
wants and deterring unwanted drug dealing and consumption, it can only
make Somerset a safer place."
