UK: BNP and Mum's Army Contest seats in Local Elections
Hull Daily Mail
Wednesday 05 Apr 2006 Hull: A candidate from a new magazine-inspired political party and a quartet from the British National Party will contest seats in next month's city council election. The publication of the official list of nominations has been released for the election on Thursday, May 4. While the main parties are represented in most of the 20 seats, there are plenty of alternatives. Mum's Army member Karen Rouse-Dean is standing in St Andrew's ward and is one of 120 candidates in seats across the country from the party formed by readers of Take A Break magazine. St Andrew's is also one of four west Hull wards being targeted by the BNP, one of the largest line-ups fielded by the party in recent years. Elsewhere, Liberal councillor Janet Toker has decided against standing for re-election in Drypool. She said: "It was not an easy decision for me to make, but there is no room for my strong morals and principles on Hull City Council." One-off candidates include UKIP's Christopher Goss in Southcoates East and Independent Mally Reeve in Ings. The Hull Independents group is standing in three wards, while Veritas has two candidates on the list. The Liberals are also fielding two candidates, while solo independent Terry Geraghty is standing again in Orchard Park. Avenue ward in west Hull has probably the most eclectic line-up, with Legalise Cannabis Alliance stalwart Carl Wagner and community campaigner Haris Livas Dawes taking their place in the contest alongside the more established parties.
