UK: Police raid drugs den
Sheffield Today
Friday 07 Apr 2006 A LARGE-scale cannabis factory on a busy Sheffield street has been smashed by police - the second successful raid in just weeks. Officers on a pre-planned raid stormed into the terraced property and discovered every room in the house, apart from one used as a living area, had cannabis plants growing inside. The cannabis cultivating den, on Abbeydale Road, close to Falmouth Road, was well equipped with specialist hydroponics and heating used to ensure the plants were kept well watered and at the correct temperature. The discovery came just over a month after another major cannabis factory was found on Penryhn Road, Hunters Bar, where drugs with a street value of £60,000 were growing in every room of the terraced house. Neighbours close to the Abbeydale Road house said they had noticed a strong smell of cannabis in recent weeks but had not known where it was coming from. Several residents reported the smell to police who, acting on their tip-offs, applied to Sheffield magistrates for a search warrant. Officers burst open a door to the house and arrested one man living in the property, who was believed to have been tending to the plants. He is thought to have lived in just one cramped room of the house and used the rest of the property to grow the plants. Police are still awaiting the results of tests to confirm the plants they confiscated were cannabis, which would be worth a significant amount of money. Inspector Scott Green, from the Woodseats Safer Neighbourhood Team which carried out the raid, said: "We seized a considerable number of plants which we believe to be cannabis. "It is a significant result for us to stop this amount of cannabis making it onto the streets, and we will continue to carry out raids like this to do all we can to disrupt the supply of drugs and make it as difficult as possible for people to access them. "This was quite a sophisticated factory set-up on a large scale, with every single room of the house used to grow plants apart from one which was used as living quarters. "This raid was a direct result of us acting on information supplied by the public and it should serve to prove we do listen and take all information received seriously." Police also carried out another pre-planned raid on Brightmore Drive, Broomhall, on Monday, as part of their ongoing crackdown on drugs. Inquiries into activities at the property are still ongoing.
