New Zealand: Man in joint for smuggling pot
Mervyn Dykes Manawatu Standard
Friday 07 Apr 2006 Trying to smuggle cannabis oil into Arohata Prison in Porirua has earned a Palmerston North man a jail term of his own. Rodney Russell, 37, put a small amount of the drug wrapped in tinfoil between two photographs included with a letter to a former partner. The drug was detected and he later pleaded guilty in Palmerston North District Court to a charge of possessing cannabis oil for supply. When he appeared for sentencing yesterday, he was jailed for six months. Judge Alistair Garland said that while the amount of drug involved was small, an important part of the sentence was the need to deter attempts to get drugs into prisons. He refused Russell permission to apply for home detention, saying it would undermine the need for a deterrent penalty.
