Zambia: 16 Zambians/foreigners nabbed

Tuesday 11 Apr 2006 The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) has arrested six Zambians, six Somalians, and four Nigerians in separate incidences for unlawful cultivation and trafficking in psychotropic substances. DEC Public Relations Officer Rosten Chulu said the Commission has also uprooted and seized more than 17.3 tonnes of psychotropic substance. The Commission in Luwingu arrested Mary Lushanda, 28 a housewife of Isandulula village, Abishai Sibale a peasant farmer of the same village and Barnabas Musamba 41, a security guard of Nkunka co-operative for cultivating 14.8 metric tonnes of cannabis. Mr. Chulu said the drugs were seized in Chibofwe in Chief Tungati area and also seized were 60 rolls of cannabis weighing 5.2 kilograms. In Solwezi the DEC arrested James Kalota Ngoma 28, a peasant farmer of Kiyakufuna for unlawful cultivation of cannabis weighing 2.4 metric tonnes. On the copperbelt the DEC arrested five Nigerians for trafficking powdered Diazepam weighing 4.1 grams without necessary documents. Mr. Chulu named those arrested as Paul Chidi Ipeto 37, Daniel Ifenya 30, Kyrian Pascal 30, Ike Chukwu Khuawu 33, all of plot number 5688 Riverside in Kitwe. One Nigerian suspect is on the run and a manhunt has been launched. Mr Chulu also named the Somalians arrested in Lusaka's Chaisa compound as Ahmed Salat 55, for trafficking 750 grams of Miraa, Omar Adbulah Yosof 22, for trafficking one bundle of Miraa weighing 242 grams, Abdul Adulahi 21, for trafficking one bundle of miraa weighing 126 grams. Other Somalians arrested include Osman Farah Duale 43, of 1716 Emmasdale for trafficking one bunch of Miraa weighing 310 grams and Ubdi, a housewife of house number 60 of Chaisa Compound for trafficking two bundles of Miraa weighing 84 grams. Also arrested is a Zambian national Christine Lunga 20, a peasant farmer of Nalwama in Mazabuka for trafficking 115 kilograms of cannabis and unnamed 16 year old pupil of George compound in Lusaka for trafficking 6.3 grams of cannabis. Mr.Chulu said the suspects will appear in court soon.
