Scotland: Schoolgirl tagged for playground drug dealing
Glasgow Evening Times
Wednesday 19 Apr 2006 A DRUG-dealing schoolgirl has been electronically tagged after being caught on camera in a school playground. Jennifer Ross, 16, had her pocket stuffed with bags of cannabis when she arrived at Chryston High School, Muirhead, Glasgow. Ross, of Ingleneuk Avenue, Millerston, Glasgow, pled guilty at Airdrie Sheriff Court last month to being concerned in the supply of drugs at the school between February 4 and March 4, 2005. Yesterday she was electronically tagged and ordered to be at home each day from 6pm until 7am for the next 10 months. Prosecutor Lyn Gordon said: "John Hunter, the deputy head of the school received information someone was acting suspiciously in school grounds. The deputy head monitored the CCTV and saw her with three bags. "Police were contacted and they too monitored the CCTV. "The girl was brought out of class to the office of head teacher Linda Johnston. "Ross's mother was also called in to attend. "She was searched and three bags of brown resinous material were found in her jacket. "A further search was made and what appeared to be a tick list was found in her jacket pocket. She was questioned about what was in the bags and she replied dope. "She told police she was only keeping it and wouldn't be stupid enough to sell the stuff." Police made further investigations, interviewing pupils at the school and some admitted they had bought cannabis from her and owed her £10. The court heard the three bags had a total weight of 29 grammes. The court was also told that Ross, who has no previous convictions, had moved back to the family home, after staying with her boyfriend in Gartcosh. Ross's lawyer, Gerry McCarron said: "She realises it is a serious matter, particularly within the grounds of a school. "It would come as no surprise to her if she was jailed. She regrets her conduct." Sentencing Ross, Sheriff Morag Galbraith said: "You have to grow up and I hope you realise you were on the brink of a custodial sentence."
