Scotland: Christmas Eve blow for Shetland cannabis user

The Shetland News

Friday 21 Apr 2006

---
A SHETLAND man had an expensive night out last Christmas Eve when police
officers found 4.1 grams of cannabis on him, worth about £20.

Yesterday morning (Thursday), Barry James Gilfillan, of Inchrye,
Sandwick, admitted possessing a class C drug as well as resisting and
obstructing police officers while they were carrying out their duty,
when he appeared before Lerwick Sheriff Court.

The court heard that police officers became suspicious when casually
talking to the 33 year old in Charlotte Street, in Lerwick, on 24
December last year.

Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said that Gilfillan was shaking and
keen to keep his hand over his right pocket with the result that police
officers demanded to search him and eventually found the cannabis in a
tobacco tin. His initial resistance was explained as "a reaction of panic"

Sheriff Graeme Napier fined Gilfillan £250 for obstructing police and
£300 for the possession of cannabis.
