Kuwait: US army probes alleged postal misuse in Kuwait marijuana
Khaleej Times
Wednesday 19 Apr 2006 KUWAIT CITY - The US military said on Wednesday that it was investigating allegations that its postal service was used to smuggle marijuana into Kuwait. The investigation was prompted by the arrest Sunday of three US civilians sub-contracted by the US military who were allegedly found in possession of at least three kilos of marijuana. Local newspapers had on Tuesday reported that Kuwaiti police had arrested three “US soldiers” in a sting operation after they allegedly tried to sell them some 1,200 dinars (4,000 dollars)-worth of marijuana. The men reportedly told police at first they were US soldiers. They also allegedly confessed to using the US postal service within the military to get the marijuana into Kuwait, newspapers said. “We are looking into allegations as to whether they used the US postal system to bring in the contraband,” army spokesperson Debbie Haston-Hilger told Deutsche Presse-Agentur, dpa. She confirmed the men were not US military personnel, but civilian contractors for the military. “The three worked for Westar, a contracted company of the Army Material Command at Camp Arifjan,” said a press statement. It added that the army had barred the men from access to military facilities in Kuwait. “The US military and its command in Kuwait expect all military, civilian and contracted personnel working for the US military to respect the laws of Kuwait,” the statement continued. “We are taking this matter very seriously and will take appropriate actions based on the findings,” it added. Undercover police had kept the suspects under surveillance for five days prior to the bust, which took place in their apartment, newspapers reported. The men were sent to Kuwait’s public prosecutor, and are expected to stand trial in the Gulf state. Kuwait’s penal code includes the death penalty for certain cases of drug smuggling and sale. If the men were found to have used the US postal service within the military to smuggle contraband, they could also face federal charges within the United States.
