UK: Drug factory closed down
icSouthLondon
Friday 21 Apr 2006 THIS is the drugs factory that Purley and Kenley's new squads of community beat officers uncovered in their first major raid this week. Officers from the two towns' Safer Neighbourhood teams burst into a property in Old Lodge Lane, Purley, in the early hours of Tuesday. An alleged hydroponics factory - including lighting and tools - was uncovered. There were about 40 cannabis plants in an upstairs bedroom. At the scene, officers arrested a 27-year-old woman, who has been bailed pending further inquiries. The investigation then led police to a second address in nearby Pampisford Road, South Croydon, where more cannabis was discovered. Also found were two credit cards, which officers believe were stolen. A 29-year-old man and a 23-year-old man were arrested at the scene on suspicion of handling stolen goods and possession of cannabis. Both have been bailed to return pending further inquiries. The two neighbourhood teams were only set up at the start of April. This was the first intelligence-led operation held by the Purley team and supported by their Kenley counterparts. Thirteen Safer Neighbourhood teams have been rolled out across Croydon to tackle antisocial behaviour and crime. In Purley the team is led by Sergeant Mark Bullen and consists of one PC and two Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs), while Kenley has one sergeant, one PC and one PCSO. The raid took neighbours in Old Lodge Lane by surprise. Pensioner Peter Capwell said: "I've been here 30 years and I've never seen anything like it. Our road is such a quiet road." Neighbour Joan Shaw added: "I didn't hear anything. It must have happened very quickly when we were in bed." Sergeant Bullen was delighted with how the raid went. "This was an excellent result for both the Purley and Kenley Safer Neighbourhood teams," he said. "We have only been in place just over a week, but already we are making a difference to the quality of life for residents in both the Purley and Kenley areas. "The community in these areas should feel reassured that we will tackle this type of crime and arrest those responsible. "We also need the public's help and assistance in reporting any drug related activity to us so we can act on that information."
