Haveeru Daily
Sunday 23 Apr 2006 MALE, April 23 (HNS) – Some 1697 suspicious packets found by lobster fishermen in a lagoon near Alifu Alifu atoll Gangehi resort has turned out to be cannabis with each packet weighing at one kilogram. Maldives Police Service said that the packets were tested in Dhoonidhoo island Saturday in the presence of officials from Maldives National Defence Force, police and Maldives Customs Service. The tests done on random packets gave the result that the packets were hashish which is one form of cannabis. The drugs found in Maavaru Lagoon by lobster fishermen from Kaafu atoll Dhiffushi is the biggest drug bust in the history of Maldives. There is growing tension among the public because of the discovery of such a large amount of drugs and many people are saying that the 1.6 tonnes of drugs should be destroyed soon in a very transparent manner. About 50 sacks containing the drugs were found in the lagoon by fishermen on a date not disclosed by them or police. The sacks were loaded onto the dhoni of those lobster fishermen and because of that 1,500 sea cucumbers and more than 400 lobsters which were kept in the dhoni were killed.
