Wales: Jailed for running cannabis factory

Daily Post

Friday 28 Apr 2006

---
A MAN was jailed for three years yesterday after police found a
cannabis-growing factory in the North Wales countryside.

Andrew Lawler, 32, received the sentence after Mold Crown Court heard
the 1,147 cannabis plants seized by officers could have been sold on the
streets for £67,000.

Lawler admitted cultivating cannabis plants and possessing the plants
with intent to supply.

Judge Nicholas Woodward told him he was "at the top of this particular
chain" and had to be dealt with severely.

Lawler lost his job because of a back problem, took cannabis for pain
relief, refused to claim benefits and spent a fortune on his credit
cards on physiotherapy and other treatments for his back, it was claimed.

But when he ended up in a dire financial situation he decided as "a
quick fix" to set up the cannabis-growing factory in an outhouse at the
home of his partner on the outskirts of Ruthin.

Police searched the outbuilding at Ty'n y Celyn at Llanelidan and seized
the plants.
