Malta: Libyan man jailed and fined over cannabis trafficking

A 30-year-old Libyan man was sentenced two years and four months in jail
and fined LM2,000 after he pleaded guilty of importing cannabis resin in
Malta. The case goes back to 26 March 2005.

Ismail Khamis Rojbani from Tripoli admitted to the Police that he had
come from Libya to buy sweets and take it back home. When he was asked
why he had fled when he was stopped at the customs, he said that he had
run out of fear since he was drunk. At first, the accused did not admit
that the drugs were his and he said that he had come to Malta for one
day to buy sweets and babies’ milk.

Following the witness of a Customs official, Mr John Azzopardi, it
resulted that when the Libyan man was taken to be searched, he fled from
custody. Inspector Norbert Ciappara led the prosecution while Lawyer Joe
Giglio defended the accused.

Meanwhile in another case, David Grech, 28 from Senglea was arraigned in
court accused of assaulting a man, Alan Scerri with a weapon and trying
to wound him with a weapon. The incident occurred yesterday at around
21:00CET in Bormla.

Grech, who is also a drug addict was also accused of foul language and
behaviour in public on the same occasion. Furthermore, he was accused of
assaulting Scerri with a weapon not licenced by the Commissioner for
Police and of breaking the provisions set by the Court on several sentences.

The accused was ordered under house arrest on a personal guarantee of
LM1,000 and is to leave his house only when he is called for appointment
at the Detox Centre between 06:00 and 08:30. The prosecution was led by
Inspector Alexander Grech and Lawyer Richard Sladden appeared for the
accused.

Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera presided the court.
