Australia: MardiGrass organisers preach love and peace

The Northern Rivers Echo

Thursday 04 May 2006

---
According to organisers of this weekend’s Nimbin MardiGrass, the
increased policing in the village over the last few weeks has once again
brought the issue of prohibition to the fore, and cannabis law reform
will be high on this year’s agenda.

“The continued high level of policing in Nimbin has pushed MardiGrass
back to its roots,” said organiser, Michael Balderstone. “It will be
much more of a protest than a party this year.”

MardiGrass organisers have recently met with police, who assured them
that crowd safety was their top priority during the festival, despite a
high number of arrests recently.

“We ask all protesters to show their usual good natured tolerance of
police and anyone blowing smoke in their face or not respecting the law
in their presence will obviously get into trouble,” said Michael. “This
is Nimbin’s biggest community event and we are expecting a bigger crowd
than ever to descend on our village with the beautiful weather we are
having. This is a peaceful and magical little corner of the world – we
will make our message about the ridiculous cannabis laws, and the damage
they are doing to our community, heard through laughter and song.”

The 14th annual Nimbin MardiGrass kicks off this Friday, May 5, with a
Sunset Opening Ceremony followed by the Harvest Ball at the Town Hall.
Saturday and Sunday, May 6-7, are the two main days with highlights
including the Hemp Olympix in Peace Park, cannabis forums at the hall, a
comedy club each night, plenty of live entertainment on three different
stages and the colourful Rally for Cannabis Law Reform at 3pm on Sunday.
