Australia: Cannabis smoker banned from driving

ABC.net

Saturday 13 May 2006

---
A South Australian woman who smoked cannabis before a crash which killed
her teenage friend has been fined and banned from driving for six months.

Kay Ellen Colman, 22, had smoked four "cones" of cannabis before she
rolled her car near Wilmington in the state's mid-north in November 2003.

Her 14-year old passenger was killed.

Ms Colman was this week found not guilty of causing death by dangerous
driving, but guilty of the lesser charge of driving without due care.

District Court judge Michael Boylan sentenced Colman on the basis that
her driving was not impaired by the cannabis.

He added that smoking it before taking the wheel was an act of "gross
selfishness."

He disqualified Colman from driving for six months and fined her $700.
