UK: Cannabis farm in rented house
ThisisHertfordshire
Tuesday 23 May 2006 POLICE raided a cannabis factory after the building's landlord tipped them off. More than 300 plants were seized when the landlord of a semi-detatched house in Greenford called police at around 10pm on Tuesday last week. He said he had stumbled on the factory when he went to the house to discuss a rent dispute and had detained a youth. Plants were found in all rooms except one living area, and police said the crop could be the work of an organised gang. Police spokesman Chris Mullally said: "There is no doubt the person arrested wasn't working alone because of the sophistication and well-organised nature of the operation. "We now need to look at who was renting the house as they could be doing this somewhere else, but this is a very good find." Each room was fitted with silver reflective material, heating equipment, UV lighting, transformers and timers. Each either had the windows blacked out or had the curtains drawn. The letterbox was sealed in a way to allow post to be delivered but not to allow the smell of the plants to escape. The house was fitted out with a sophisticated ventilation system, which would lead the smell from the plants out of the house through the chimney. A hole had been made in the floorboards in the hallway where the remnants of previous harvests, potting plants and other materials were dumped in black bin liners. The electricity supply had been tampered with to bypass the meter. Police also seized several bottles of fertilizer, a water pump and a hose with a long-reach watering attachment. The plants cost around £3 and yield around £10-worth of cannabis. The cost of setting up the factory has been estimated at between £5,000 and £10,000.
