UK: Cannabis Man fined
Evening Post
Thursday 25 May 2006 A Llanelli man who used cannabis for pain relief has been fined £150 by town magistrates. Jeremy Ernest Walters, of Granby Close, Morfa, handed over 3.04g of cannabis resin when police found him hiding under the communal stairs of flats in Llwynhendy. This week, town magistrates fined Walters, aged 31, £75 for possession of a controlled drug and £75 for breaching a previous conditional discharge. After reviewing Walters' income, Magistrates rejected a prosecution request for £50 court costs. The Crown Prosecution Service told the court how officers discovered Walters on May 10. He smelt of alcohol and they asked him if he had anything in his pockets. He told them he had "some blow", which he said he took because of bad joints. Mitigating solicitor David Elvy said: "He knows it's illegal, but one of the effects of cannabis is that it helps him with his pain." Mr Elvy explained that, after 20 years of excess drinking, his client's stomach could no longer cope with conventional pain killers. He said: "He has cirrhosis of the liver and this week he was in hospital with stomach pains. He discharged himself but has not had the results of scans back and is extremely worried about what the pain might be." Magistrates were told that Walters had a substantial list of previous convictions. http://www.thisissouthwales.co.uk/ htp://www.ccguide.org.uk/index.php
