UK: Drug testing in schools likely to rise
Channel 4 News
Wednesday 31 May 2006 The number of schools testing students for drugs is likely to rise following a successful pilot project in Kent. Behaviour and exam results improved after the year-long scheme at The Abbey School in Faversham. Secondary headteachers are now getting help to screen for substances like cannabis, cocaine and heroin. But random drug testing will not be mandatory, a Government education spokesman stressed. Headteachers and parents will be asked if they would like their pupils to take part in the pilot. Of the school's 960 pupils, 86 per cent consented to be randomly tested. Only one child tested positive, for cannabis. Mr Walker said: "There's less disruption in the classroom, less incidents in the playground or on the way to school. Children feel that they are far better protected. "The biggest reason for taking drugs is peer group pressure. It looks like we may well have found a way for children to have a viable way of saying no to their peer group." A DfES spokesman said: "The decision to adopt this approach will be one for heads in consultation with parents. "This is about providing schools who want to look at this approach with the best possible information and guidance rather than forcing them to do it." http://www.channel4.com/news/content/news-storypage.jsp?id=2023878 http://www.ccguide.org.uk/index.php
