UK: Gran's visit

Helen Compson

Hexham Courant

Friday 26 May 2006

---
HUMSHAUGH’S cannabis eating granny took her cause to Downing Street this
week when she handed in a petition to Tony Blair.

Afterwards, Patricia Tabram led a demonstration in Parliament Square and
a press conference in the House of Commons, highlighting the plight of
medicinal cannabis users.

It is time to stop prosecuting people who use the drug to keep their
illnesses at bay, she said on Wednesday.

“We want Tony Blair to form an association with MPs, doctors and some of
our representatives to look at how they can end these prosecutions.

“We want people who are ill to have the freedom of choice to medicate
with medicines of their choice within the privacy of their own homes.

“I self-medicate, and I’m not harming anybody.”

Wednesday’s assault on Parliament followed Mrs Tabram’s decision to form
the Cannabis Education Trust with the help of another vociferous
believer, campaigner Andy Cornwell.

They met while they were both attending a Hemp Fair at Wembley Stadium
last summer.

“I gave a speech that day about how many people in this country
self-medicate with cannabis to ease their suffering,” she said.

“Andy believes, like I do, that the majority of MPs don’t know anything
about cannabis, and we want to educate them on the matter.”
