UK: Man spared jail over drug conviction

Tuesday 06 Jun 2006 A man caught with more than £2,600 worth of cannabis has been given a suspended prison sentence. Craig Weston, 39, of Wootton, near Abingdon, had been convicted of possession of cannabis with intent to supply at an earlier hearing at Didcot Magistrates' Court and was sent to Oxford Crown Court for sentence. Peter Coombe, prosecuting, told the court that police had searched Weston's home on February 2. He said: "An officer asked Mr Weston if he knew if drugs were present at the address. "The defendant handed him a carrier bag containing nine packages of cannabis. Seven were 50g packages, one was 26g and one was 13g. Police also searched the bedroom and found a variety of containers of cannabis, mostly very small." He said one pack contained 85.8g of cannabis, but the others were very modest amounts. Mr Coombe added: "That amount of cannabis could be sold for up to £2,628. "When the defendant was interviewed, he said a friend he had not seen for many years had turned up and asked him to look after these drugs." Mr Coombe said Weston had previous convictions dating back to 1979, including one from 1999 for cultivating cannabis, when police found 33 cannabis plants and hydroponic equipment at his home. The court heard Weston was a sick man, who regularly took a morphine-based drug and lived with his elderly mother. Judge Christopher Compston gave Weston a 28-week jail sentence, suspended for two years.
