'I had no idea £3m drugs were in my van'

A DRIVER who was pulled over by police near Ryton in a random roadside
stop and search has told the court he had 'no idea' he had nearly
£3million worth of cannabis resin in the back of his van.
Roy Selby, 41, of Elm Row, Stockton, pleaded not guilty on Friday to
possessing 1.2 tonnes of the class C drug on February 22 with intent to
supply it.

Selby, who has been held in custody since the discovery of the drugs,
will now face trial.

As reported previously in the Advertiser, Selby was arrested after the
police stopped the blue and white Iveco van he was driving along the A45
near Ryton-on-Dunsmore as part of a routine vehicle check.

In the back of the van, suprised officers found 5,000 blocks of cannabis
resin weighing 1.234 tonnes and, it was said at the time, worth an
estimated £2.7 million.

Investigators hailed the swoop as the biggest ever cannabis find in Rugby.

After Selby had entered his not guilty plea at the court on Friday
prosecutor Catherine Spedding said the issue in the case would be that
Selby says he had 'no knowledge of the drugs in the back of the van.'

The case was adjourned for trial, and Selby was remanded in custody by
Recorder Justin Wigoder.
