UK: Second student suspended for possession
Haydn Lewis York Press
Tuesday 20 Jun 2006 TWO teenagers have been kicked out of class at a York secondary school for cannabis dealing and possession. Fulford School has expelled a teenage boy for supplying cannabis and suspended a girl for 15-days for cannabis possession after an incident at the school on June 8. There are 1,303 youngsters at Fulford School and head teacher Steve Smith said he was determined to take a tough line on drugs. He said: "Obviously, drugs are prevalent in society but we try to keep them away from school as far as possible. "I'm sure the vast majority of our parents will support the stance the school has taken and, speaking as a parent myself, I am sure I wouldn't have wanted drugs anywhere near my children when they were at school." The police and the children's parents have been informed and the school is working closely with both to bring the matter to a conclusion. A governors' meeting will be held later this week to decide whether to uphold or overturn Mr Smith's decisions. Both pupils' parents will be offered a chance to put representations to the governors. A spokesman for York Police said: "I can confirm that a youth was arrested for selling a small amount of cannabis and he has been referred to our youth offending team for further assessments." Mark Ellis, of City of York Council's education team, said the guidelines around permanent exclusions were that if a pupil is caught supplying an illegal drug the decision to expel lies with the head teacher. Mr Smith said: "We have taken a tough line which is consistent with other York secondary schools to get the message across that we take a dim view of drug taking. "This is not the first time we have had to deal with an incident of drugs, there have been a couple of occasions in the past, but our line remains the same." Earlier this month, The Press reported that three students were suspended from All Saints' RC School after a 13-year-old boy was caught with cannabis. All three students were suspended from school for 15 days pending further investigations and warned it could lead to a permanent exclusion. That incident followed another incident last month when All Saints' expelled two teenage girls for taking ecstasy tablets. Head teacher Bill Scriven said the school was determined to be tough on drugs. In March last year, The Press reported a Fulford schoolgirl was found smoking a cannabis cigarette on the first day of a week-long battlefields trip to France and Belgium. She was suspended for a fixed period by Mr Smith. http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/ http://www.ccguide.org.uk/
