UK: Cannabis factory uncovered in Wyken
Coventry Observer
Wednesday 21 Jun 2006 POLICE who raided a house in Wyken discovered a 'cannabis factory' where over 400 plants were growing. Officers went to the rented house in Ansty Road on Friday after a neighbour called the police to complain about the smell emanating from the house. When officers entered the house, cannabis plants were found growing in every room except the kitchen and two bathrooms. A total of 426 plants were seized, together with high-powered lamps and fans used in the cultivation of the plants. Sgt Phil Rafferty told The Observer an electrician had to be called to the house as extra plugs had been installed. The home's supply has also been set up to bypass the electricity meter. Sgt Rafferty added he had never come across such a large scale operation before and added officers spent the whole day at the premises clearing up. "We were very shocked as you don't come across this every day," he said. "The stench was overpowering and we had to act quickly as we were worried about the health of the neighbours." Three men appeared at Coventry Magistrates Court on Monday charged with cultivation of cannabis and abstracting electricity. All three were remanded in custody to reappear before magistrates tomorrow (Friday).
