Netherlands: Maastricht postpones 'coffee shop' plan
Expatica.com
Tuesday 27 Jun 2006 BRUSSELS — The Dutch city of Maastricht has postponed its controversial decision to move its 'coffee shops' closer to the Dutch-Belgian border. The Dutch government has decided it will investigate the matter further following loud protests from Belgium in recent weeks. Maastricht wants to relocate the coffee shops — where cannabis can be legally sold and used — away from the city centre closer to the national border. The plan is designed to reduce the problem of drug tourism in the Maastricht city centre. But the plan came up against heavy criticism from the mayors in the Belgian border municipalities of Voeren, Lanaken and Maasmechelen. Dutch mayors in border municipalities also expressed concerns about the plan. And Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt raised the matter with the Dutch government, which has since decided to investigate the plan together with the Belgian government. It means that temporarily, the Maastricht coffee shops will remain where they are. http://www.expatica.com/source/site_article.asp?subchannel_id=48&story_id=31145&name=Maastricht+postpones+'coffee+shop'+plan
