UK: Lessons in Life Skills for Sixth-Formers
Laura Matless Bath Chronicle
Wednesday 05 Jul 2006 Sex, cannabis and a severe lack of cash are some of the topics to be tackled in a series of workshops on student life. Almost 1,000 sixth-formers will get special lessons as part of events designed to help them cope when they dive into life after school. Basic cookery skills, relaxation and sport will also be promoted in the sessions, which have been organised by Bath and North East Somerset Council. Martin Pellow, a council sports development officer, will kick off each of the sessions with a talk about why it is important to look after yourself. The conferences are aimed to reach every sixth-former in the area, and will be held at Somervale School in Midsomer Norton, Chew Valley School in Chew Magna, and Hayesfield School in Bath. "It is about getting them to address issues around their own health and leisure activities," said Kate Murphy, personal, social and health education lead for B &NES. "The healthy eating is to get them to sample some recipes and look at things in a more interactive way. "The cannabis workshop is from a former cannabis user, and will also give an update on the law. "Face to Face with Finance will talk about taking care of your finances when you become independent from your parents, and about not getting into debt." "And the Guide to Sex will include some important, practical information based on a below-the-belt Question of Sport, delivered by the school nurse team." Council chairman Cllr Loraine Morgan Brinkhurst will attend two of the conferences. She said: "I am delighted to be invited to open these conferences, and to be able to show my support. "This is a wonderful opportunity for the students to discuss healthy lifestyles, and to acquire knowledge which they will remember in their everyday adult lives." James Farndon, sports development manager at B &NES Council, will be giving taster sessions in some activities the pupils may not have tried. There will be a chance to embrace the tiger and exercise for energy and mental focus in T'Ai Chi Chi Kung, try out Korean martial art Tae Kwondo, as well as dodgeball and boxercise. He said: "Partnership working between agencies has provided a wide range of workshops for the sixth-form pupils. "The conferences provide an excellent opportunity to participate in new activities, as well as learn about how to live a healthy lifestyle on leaving school." The Hayesfield event is on Thursday, July 13. l.matless@bathchron.co.uk http://www.thisisbath.co.uk/
