Malaysia: Suspected drug trafficker acquitted after four-and-a-half

Friday 07 Jul 2006 JOHOR BARU: A 37-year-old Indonesian odd-job worker was acquitted and discharged at the High Court here today after spending four-and-a-half years in prison as a suspected drug-trafficker. Asnawi Yusuf was arrested in 2002 at Jalan Permas 10/10 in Bandar Permas Jaya here. At the time of his arrest, he was standing next to a parked Proton Iswara alone when a police party approached him. Upon checking the car, police found 28.666 grams of cannabis and he was arrested under Section 39B (1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. The Indonesian claimed that he was unaware that the bag on the seat next to the driver’s contained drugs. Asnawi had spend two years in the Ayer Molek Prison before he was transferred to the Simpang Renggam Detention Centre. Judge Datuk Syed Ahmad Helmy Syed Ahmad in his judgement that the prosecution had failed to prove that the drugs belonged to Asnawi. Asnawi's counsel, Subramaniam Nair, told reporters that his client was eager to return to Indonesia and had been referred by the court to the Immigration Department, as his travelling documents had expired while being held under detention. http://www.nst.com.my/Current_News/nst/Friday/NewsBreak/20060707184326/Article/index_html
