JOHOR BARU: A 37-year-old Indonesian odd-job worker was acquitted and
discharged at the High Court here today after spending four-and-a-half
years in prison as a suspected drug-trafficker.

Asnawi Yusuf was arrested in 2002 at Jalan Permas 10/10 in Bandar Permas
Jaya here.

At the time of his arrest, he was standing next to a parked Proton
Iswara alone when a police party approached him.

Upon checking the car, police found 28.666 grams of cannabis and he was
arrested under Section 39B (1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

The Indonesian claimed that he was unaware that the bag on the seat next
to the driver’s contained drugs.

Asnawi had spend two years in the Ayer Molek Prison before he was
transferred to the Simpang Renggam Detention Centre.

Judge Datuk Syed Ahmad Helmy Syed Ahmad in his judgement that the
prosecution had failed to prove that the drugs belonged to Asnawi.

Asnawi's counsel, Subramaniam Nair, told reporters that his client was
eager to return to Indonesia and had been referred by the court to the
Immigration Department, as his travelling documents had expired while
being held under detention.
