Tuesday 11 Jul 2006

---
A CHARGE-HAND sprayer, who set up a sophisticated hydroponic cannabis
nursery in a rented room in Southampton when his relationship with his
partner was going through a difficult period, has been jailed for ten
months.

Christian Avery was arrested when police investigating a
multi-million-pound drug dealing network forced their way into a locked
bedroom at a house in Knighton Road and discovered the cannabis-growing
factory as well as 39 plants.
"Cannabis is a lethal drug and people who produce it, must accept the
consequences."
Judge John Boggis QC

Avery, a 33-year-old Australian, of Millers Pond Gardens, Sholing,
pleaded guilty to producing cannabis.

He claimed that the drugs were for medicinal purposes because he had a
bad leg and the drugs were purely for his own use.

But prosecutor Matthew Jewell said that the prosecution did not accept
this because of the time and effort Avery must have put into setting up
the unit.

Urging the city crown court to accept the recommendation of a community
punishment order, defence lawyer William Mousley said that the offence
happened almost two years ago, that his client had pleaded guilty at the
first opportunity.

In jailing Avery, Judge John Boggis QC said: "This was a clearly-thought
production unit.

"Cannabis is a lethal drug and people who produce it, must accept the
consequences."
