Russia Will Not Legalize Drugs
Prensa Latina
Tuesday 25 Jul 2006 Moscow, Jul 6 (Prensa Latina) In a two-hour virtual conference on the internet with thousands of national and international participants, Russia´s President Vladimir Putin refuted a drive to legalize "soft drugs" like marihuana. In the conference on 49 economic, military and other domestic topics, Putin emphasized that Moscow backs international agreements banning official drug sales. Such legalization in other countries helped reduce the consumption of "hard drugs" like heroin, but did increase consumption of soft drugs among youth, added Putin. He said drug addiction in Russia jumped 15-fold from the late 80s and in 2000 was over six million between regular and intermittent consumers. The conference also touched on economic issues such as the war with Ukraine over gas sales to Europe, new defense legislation, and measures to fight corruption and bribes to avoid military service (obligatory in Russia). http://www.plenglish.com/Article.asp?ID=%7B30939A70-0419-4E28-A8D3-8452C5357465%7D&language=EN
