Morocco: Cannabis, Second eradication campaign to start in August
Houcine Ait Mhand Morocco Times
Thursday 27 Jul 2006 After its success in the first eradication campaign against cannabis cultivation, the authorities of the Taounate Province will launch a second in Chefchaouen and Al Hoceima Provinces in August. According to a communiqué released by the Prefecture of Chefchaouen Province, the new eradication campaign will target the cannabis-growing irrigated areas along rivers and valleys, in which the plant is yet to grow in Ghafsai and towns near Ketama. Playing hide-and-seek with the authorities, the farmers in hash-making regions use weird ways to hide cannabis cultivation from the eyes of the officials. The farmers, for example, grow vegetables and use them as a camouflage in order to flee the spraying operations aiming at destroying this crop. As a result, the authorities will step up their efforts and launch a second campaign to combat the plant. The first campaign has been successful, the authorities said. The amount of cultivated land to be eradicated, rises to about 977,90 ha, 82% of which is destroyed in the Ghafsai commune situated near Ketama and Chechcaouen. In addition, eight farmers were arrested and a warrant was issued for the arrest of 771 others charged with cultivating cannabis. The police also seized 24 water pumps and more than 450 hoses used to irrigate cannabis fields, as well as 20.8 KG of hashish seeds. The communiqué added that the operations directed at the eradication of the prohibited crop have created positive reactions among the public. http://www.moroccotimes.com/paper/article.asp?idr=2&id=16230
