UK: Cannabis criminal jailed and his plants destroyed

AN "ARROGANT" criminal's lucrative cannabis factory went up in smoke
this week after a judge jailed him and ordered that all his equipment be
destroyed.

Neal Lewis's secret enterprise could have earned him an estimated £8,000
a year in clear profit at the large detached house where he lived in
Norbury.

But it was brought to a halt when police raided the house and found 107
cannabis plants growing in a small rear bedroom.

Lewis,41, was jailed for 18 months on Wednesday at Croydon Crown Court
having been found guilty of cultivating the drug and siphoning off
electricity to power his illegal operation at an earlier trial.

Ruth Coffey, prosecuting, said police raided the house on an entirely
different matter and discovered the large quantity of plants purely by
chance.

She added: "The lighting and irrigation system were powered by
wire,which by-passed the pre-payment meter.

"The equipment had been installed on April 28, last year and remained in
use until January 3 this year."

The court heard that around £703 of electricity had been used, none of
which had gone through the meter, which needed repairs costing £132.

Experts reckoned that one crop would bring in £2,000 and a total of four
crops a year were possible depending on the health of the plants.

Judge John Tanzer ordered that the plants and hydroponic gear be forfeited.

Judge Tanzar told Lewis: "This is the production of cannabis on a
commercial basis. The premises were under your control.

"During the trial you could properly be described as arrogant and you
told the jury a story which, understandably, they rejected."
