UK: Cannabis 'farm' found

Lancashire Telegraph

Tuesday 15 Aug 2006

---
A MINI cannabis factory has been discovered in an empty house after a
neighbour saw a plant sitting on a bedroom window sill.

Police raided the abandoned property on Lower Barnes Street,
Clayton-le-Moors, early yesterday and removed eight adult cannabis plants.

The specimens were found in two upstairs bedrooms and the bathroom. They
had been placed in direct sunlight in order to assist their growth.

A computer was also taken away for analysis.

PC Rob Flanagan, community beat manager for Clayton-le-Moors, said: "We
attended the property following intelligence from residents and police
observation of the area.

The house is empty but it is obvious that someone has been using it and
visiting regularly in order to grow the plants."

Police had initially been contacted after one of the plants was spotted
in an upstairs window. It was later replaced with a wilting tomato plant
in order not to arouse suspicion.

Neighbours said the property had been empty for over three months,
however, an unusual amount of activity had taken place and had caused
residents concern.

One neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "There are always
lots of comings and goings in this street, but it is usually best not to
talk about them."

Sgt Oliver Jones was pleased with the results of the raid. He said:
"This is just another example of what is being undertaken by the local
neighbourhood police team and the community.

"Although it is not a vast quantity of cannabis plants that has been
recovered, it goes a great way to demonstrate the positive action we
will take in partnership with the community against people committing
offences of this nature."

Police are continuing their inquiries but so far no arrests have been made.
