UK: Judge praises residents who grassed-up cannabis grower

Croydon Advertiser

Wednesday 16 Aug 2006

---
EAGLE-EYED residents who spotted a flourishing cannabis factory in their
street have been praised by a court judge.

Neighbours in Rees Gardens, Croydon, reported their suspicions to
police, who eventually raided the house.

Cam Luu, 44, tried to escape, but was caught at the back door on June 1
this year.

On Wednesday he was sentenced at Croydon Crown Court for his role in
looking after 250 cannabis plants that were discovered there.

Unemployed chef Luu, of Rangefield Gardens, Downham, Bromley, admitted
the charge of producing cannabis but denied knowing anything about the
person who set up the illegal project.

Helen Harper, defending, said Luu had been very much at the lower end of
the scale in the enterprise.

Judge John Tanzer told Luu: "The reason you were apprehended and the
factory found was entirely due to local residents acting in a
public-spirited way in keeping the police informed."

Luu, of previous good character, was given a suspended sentence of 11
months - which lasts for two years - and must carry out 200 hours unpaid
work.
