UK: 500 suspected cannabis plants siezed by police
Joanne Ginley Yorkshire Post
Wednesday 16 Aug 2006 A landlord helped police recover almost 500 suspected cannabis plants from a property in Bradford. The landlord made the discovery when he carried out a spot-check on one of his rented properties in Great Horton on Sunday. Further searches by the Bradford District Drugs Team revealed five rooms containing a total of 492 plants and equipment believed to be used in the cultivation of cannabis. The plants and equipment have been recovered for forensic examinations. Yesterday Det Insp Neil Benstead urged people to contact police if they have suspicions about what nearby properties are being used for. He said: "We know that some residential properties are being used by individuals as a base to cultivate cannabis. Often these properties are rented and for this reason we have been encouraging both landlords and residents to be vigilant. "Dealers looking to make money by growing cannabis may rent an address because they want to distance themselves from the property. They are likely to run up high heating and electricity bills and may try to avoid making payments or registering utilities in their name. "In this instance a conscientious landlord thought to check on the property unannounced and in doing so made a very unexpected discovery. "It is important that landlords are open to the possibility that tenants may be using their properties for illegal purposes and that they play their part in reporting anything suspicious to police." http://www.yorkshiretoday.co.uk/ViewArticle2.aspx?SectionID=1084&ArticleID=1698077
