UK: Cannabis charge man given a second chance

Herts and Essex News

Thursday 17 Aug 2006

---
A SAFFRON Walden man thanked a judge on Friday for giving him a chance
to prove he had turned his life around.

John Wiseman, 28, was before Chelmsford Crown Court for sentencing after
admitting a charge of possessing cannabis resin with intent to supply.

Wiseman, of Radwinter Road, was sentenced to six months' imprisonment,
suspended for two years.

He was also placed under the supervision of a probation officer for 18
months and ordered to attend a Think First Programme.

Judge Charles Gratwicke said Wiseman had a disgraceful record and in the
past had behaved like a complete idiot.

However, reports he had read indicated that he might have now turned the
corner.

He said: "This court is impressed with what it has read about you and
the efforts you have made to hold down a job. The court is going to take
an unusual step and suspend the prison sentence.

"You now have an opportunity to get your life back on track."

Peter Clark, prosecuting, said on October 28 last year, police officers
went with a search warrant to the defendant's flat.

They found drugs paraphernalia and two boxes containing traces of herbal
cannabis.

On the top of a door frame was a key for a locked cupboard in the
communal hallway.

Inside it was a box containing 50g of cannabis with a street value of
between £217 and £290.

Officers also seized a mobile phone containing a message about drugs.

Ian Boyes, defending, said Wiseman accepted he had been supplying
cannabis to friends and people he knew.

He said: "He has kept himself out of trouble and washed his hands of
those he used to associate with. He is now a hardworking man who is
starting to show some maturity in his approach to life."
