Russia: 7500 ha of wild cannabis destroyed in Siberian Federal District

Tuesday 29 Aug 2006 7500 ha of wild cannabis destroyed in Siberian Federal District, department of Federal Drug Control Service reported. Operatives summarized results of “Poppy 2006” operation achieved during the last three months. The operation allowed discovering more than 3000 crimes, 935 men were detained. Most of the crimes are considered felony, and 65 of them were committed by organized criminal groups. More than 600 kgs of drugs were withdrawn from illegal trafficking, with 580 of them being marijuana. Officers of regional departments of Federal Drug Control Service hold the “Poppy” operation annually, from May to October, with additional help from Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Emergency Situation and local law-enforcement agencies. The operation is usually held in two stages. The main objective of the first stage is to discover places where drug-containing plants grow or are grown and to block channels of drugs delivery. Climatic and natural conditions in Siberian Federal District are very favorable for rich growth of wild cannabis. As a result, marijuana is the most popular drug in SFD – 85 percent of drugs withdrawn from illegal trafficking are cannabis-derived. Operation “Poppy 2006” is moving along successfully and currently reached its second stage, the main objective of which is suppression of drug-traffickers activities. http://english.newslab.ru/news/199609
