PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- About 130 patients now have state permission to
possess small amounts of marijuana for pain relief.

Rhode Island became the eleventh state earlier this year to legalize
marijuana for medicinal purposes. So far, 131 people have received cards
allowing them to possess two-point-five ounces of the drug or 12 plants.

An additional 129 caregivers have permission to provide marijuana to up
to five patients. They can keep a maximum of 12 plants or two-point-five
ounces of marijuana.

State health authorities say they initially guessed about one-thousand,
500 people would apply for the cards.
