UK: Cancer patient found growing cannabis
The Lowestoft Journal
Friday 22 Sep 2006 A MAN caught growing nearly 60 cannabis plants at his Lowestoft home insisted he was not a dealer but took the drug to ease the pain caused by cancer, a court heard. Police officers raided 50-year-old Colin Bellis's home and found 58 cannabis plants growing around his property in Birds Lane, Lowestoft Magistrates' Court was told on Monday. Bellis pleaded guilty to producing a class C drug as well as being in possession of herbal cannabis and cannabis resin. Magistrates said they did not have the necessary powers to sentence Bellis, who has previous convictions for the cultivation and possession of cannabis, and granted him unconditional bail to appear before Ipswich Crown Court at a later date. Mitzy Bond, prosecuting, said police found the cannabis plants and associated equipment, such as heating lamps, when they executed a warrant at Bellis's home on April 11. Two of the plants were found growing in a dog kennel in the garden. Martin Clarke, representing Bellis, said: “Mr Bellis is a cancer sufferer and smokes cannabis for medicinal reasons and grows it for his own use. He doesn't accept that he has been growing it for commercial means.” It was Bellis's second appearance at Lowestoft Magistrates' Court in a week. Last Thursday, he was cleared of harassing two environmental health officers following an earlier court hearing when he had faced charges of failing to comply with a noise abatement order and obstructing police officers. http://www.lowestoftjournal.co.uk/
